Yahoo! Groups
Yahoo! Groups is a free service from Yahoo! that can be used in a number of different ways. It is frequently used by enthusiasts to start a discussion group with open membership on a particular theme such as a celebrity fanclub or a favourite sports team but it can really be put to any use the owner decides. A Group is allocated its own web address and dedicated email address when it is created and can be listed in one of the Yahoo! Group directory categories if desired.
Messages sent to the group are usually distributed by email to all the members of the group. This is often in response to a message made by another member. There are also options to store images and web links, run polls and manage an events diary.
A Yahoo! Group can also be created with closed membership so that only invited and approved members can join the group. The message system can be configured so that only the group administrator or appointed moderators are allowed to send messages to the other group members, and the message archive can be kept in the public domain or limited to access by members only.
A Yahoo! Group can be used as a mailing list by restricting the message handling so that only the group owner can send out messages to the members. A signup box can be placed on your web site inviting members to join your group and receive your newsletter, press releases, bulletins and notices by email. An example can be seen on the home page of Joanna's Restaurant.
By allowing people to opt in when they want, and unsubscribe at any time you avoid the need to manage the list of members. Yahoo! will keep track of the membership records and email addresses for you but you can have access to the list if required. Responsible management of your mailing list and respect for the privacy and security of your member records is paramount, especially to ensure compliance with anti-spam legislation.
Setting up a Yahoo! Group is free of charge. You will need a Yahoo! ID to register your group. Quotes can give guidance on the settings required to manage a simple but effective mailing list and integrate the membership signup box with your web site upon request.
