Alexa
Alexa Internet is subsidiary of Amazon.com. It provides a search facility powered by Google, a directory powered by the Open Directory Project (DMOZ) and publishes information on web site traffic using data collected from the Alexa Toolbar. Alexa also developed the Wayback Machine and manages the data collection process for the Internet Archive.
Alexa doesn't appear to offer much in the way of unique content but tucked away on the end of its search results are links for Site Info. This gives an overview of the web site, traffic details, related links and web sites linking in.
The information shown in Site Info can be amended if required. It would seem that Google trusts the review process of Alexa in the same way as the one for the Open Directory Project because details recorded for a web site on Alexa will often find their way into Google search results. It is now almost impossible to get listed in the Open Directory Project because of a lack of editors but the details recorded on Alexa will often be approved quite promptly. Web sites reviewed by Alexa are likely to get a small boost in Google's search results.
Unfortunately the web site traffic and link information can be a bit misleading because the data is only supplied by the Alexa Toolbar. Nevertheless it does provide some interesting information from time to time. Some web sites will also be assigned their own ASIN Number on Amazon.com, e.g. B0006B8MOE. Alexa also provides Site Info for the A9.com search engine and for Alexadex.com and creates thumbnail images of home pages to show in its search results.
